Services

To ensure that Praxis is a good fit for a client’s needs, I conduct a free consultation prior to beginning treatment. This consultation lasts 15 minutes, and provides an opportunity to gather information before deciding to proceed with therapy. I ask a few questions about your general reasons for seeking therapy to ensure I can help with the issue. I then provide a brief overview of my approach and what a client can expect from the therapy process. If we decide our fit is a good one, I can then also provide information about how to complete initial documentation and schedule the first appointment.

Individual Counseling

People often seek counseling because something in their life causes a great deal of pain or worry. Others come not because of a specific or urgent problem, but because they feel generally dissatisfied or uncertain about their goals in life and/or how to achieve them.

My first aim is to help each person deal with any immediate problems or life events creating significant emotional distress or affecting relationships. During this first phase of counseling, I typically use a short-term, solution-focused approach aimed at identifying and practicing coping skills to stabilize and enhance a person’s emotional state and general functioning.

Depending on the person and their goals, I may recommend we begin a structured process called RESHAPE in which we evaluate all major areas of an individual’s life and identify desired changes.

Most importantly, I make an intentional effort to understand the personal story and life goals of each individual with whom I work. My counseling approach is flexible and adaptive because it is important that each client feels the work we are doing is aimed at their personal needs and progress.

It is hard to state how much Relationship Quality affects our lives - including our emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Unfortunately, relationships are often a source of frustration, disappointment, anger, and hurt, whether from feeling like you can’t communicate because you’re speaking different emotional languages, disagreements about priorities and workload sharing, frequent and/or intense conflicts, relational injuries such as betrayal or infidelity, or feeling relationship fatigue and burn-out.

Couples counseling begins with understanding the history of a relationship - including its high and low points, past hurts, and any persistent unhealthy patterns. This exploration is aimed at helping a couple move their relationship to a phase of growth and/or healing. I work with couples using a process in which Expectations and Commitments are explored for needed Adjustments within a framework in which Mutual Compassion and Understanding are being increased. While exploring a relationship can be challenging, it allows both partners to make the adjustments needed to grow (or restart) their affection and trust for each other, manage their home and family life more effectively, and truly share their hearts and lives.

Couples Counseling

Family Counseling

Family issues are often part of individual or couples counseling. How we respond to and interact with other family members – whether our parents, siblings, in-laws, or children - is a major concern for all of us. This is especially true when those interactions feel draining, difficult to manage, or wounding to us.

In addition to working with these issues during individual or couples counseling, I provide family counseling in which other family members (age 14 and older) are included in the counseling process. During these sessions, we focus on how each person affects, and is affected by, the dynamics of the family system. This includes issues such as the structure of the family system, and whether interaction styles and boundaries are appropriate and healthy. Family counseling is particularly relevant to some of the more challenging family structures (e.g., step-families, blended families) and situations (e.g., interactions between parents and adult children, step-parenting, foster parenting, divorce recovery, co-parenting after divorce, enmeshment, estrangement and being no-contact, or death of a family member).

Group Counseling

I offer selected counseling groups on a short-term basis at various times during the year. These in-person groups last 6 to 12 weeks and address specific topics and concerns. Group members are pre-screened to ensure an appropriate fit with the subject matter, and the size is limited to allow comfortable and effective participation by all group members.

Format

In-person sessions are available Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons. These sessions are held at the Common Ground location at 604 Davis Circle in downtown Huntsville, AL. All group sessions are also held at this location.

In-Person

Telehealth sessions (video or phone) are available throughout the week. A limited number of evening and Saturday morning sessions are also available. Clients must be physically present in the state of Alabama during all telehealth sessions.

Forms of Payment

We are not an in-network insurance provider, but you may be able to use your out-of-network benefits for therapy. As part of the initial consultation, we will help you understand your out-of-network benefits and how to efficiently manage all claim submissions and follow-ups. We can also provide you with a form (called a Superbill) which you can submit to your insurance company manually. Once the deductible has been met, clients often receive a reimbursement of 60-90% of their session fees. A more accurate estimate can be given once we have your insurance information to calculate your benefits.
